the sleek and lovely brown queen said her goodbyes to the kittens and looked at Mungojerrie with bright pale green eyes as she slipped into the shadows. Cassandra waited there for the Tiger tom her tail patiently sawing.

Mungojerrie chewed his lip nervously as he and Cassandra walked away from yet another conversation with kittens - only this time, he was pretty sure it wasn't the best idea to leave them on their own. Now they were so worried about Victoria, he hoped they didn't get too anxious and go see her when she needed rest and recovery... He also hoped she wasn't too badly injured. Coming up to the queen, he started to sit down, then thought better of it. If there were dangerous cats about, he had better stay on the alert. "Oi do 'ope the others're okay," he confided, though trying not to sound as worried as he felt.

the lovely brown nodded and looked down shyly, she had started to say something earlier and she was determined that this time, this time she would follow through. "as do I Jerrie, as do I." she said, then Cassandra looked back at him her eyes gleaming. "I just thought that they needed some time to sort themselves out,and Jerrie I do appreciate how you are concerned for the kittens, for Victoria...for me. Jerrie I am hardly an expert on love, till I joined the Tribe I did not know that it could be...nice. and I would so like to be with someone nice." then she flicked her ear, "what do you think Jerrie should we watch them, check on Victoria or walk the perimeter? as long as I am with you I feel safe." she said in a soft velvety voice.

Jerrie gulped as she started complimenting him again...well, all right, she just said she appreciated him, but it still made him blush. And then she started talking about love. As he listened to her, he started to wonder...was she trying to say something...? No, he told himself quickly. She meant no more than she had said outright - she hoped to find a nice mate someday. He hoped that for her too. There was no way in Heaviside she would ever think of him that way, and he was silly for even wondering. Quickly he brought his attention back to what she was going on to say. "Er...per'aps it migh' be wisest ta walk the perimeter. It sounds like Miss Vick is looked after fer now, an' we c'n be on the lookout fer any strange activity as we check the edges o' the Yahd fer any intruders." Then he realized he might be putting a queen in danger by letting her come. "I don't s'pose I c'n convince ya to stay 'ere or someplace safer. But stick close to me." He reddened. "In case there's any danger, I mean. It's not too likely, so don't fret."

the lovely brown queen did not show her disappointment but she could not help but think, 'It is the Ball all over again, the only ones who asked me to dance were that strange dusky gray and brown tabby and Alonzo, and Alonzo only after he got what he wanted during the mating Dance.' Cassandra lowered her eyes shyly, "of course I will stay close to you for...protection." she said. then Cassandra hesitated for a beat, "Jerrie do you think that there is something...wrong with me?" she asked softly.

Mungojerrie groaned inwardly. See, this was why he couldn't trust himself around queens! Now he had said something to hurt or offend Cassandra, and he didn't know what. Hadn't he said everything he ought to have said? Hadn't he acted properly in wanting to be cautious and warning her to be cautious as well, given the possible danger? Perhaps he had annoyed her because she felt he implied she wasn't able or intelligent enough to look after herself. Ahh, he didn't know... "O' course not," he blurted out quickly, in answer to her question. "Er, er, that is...wot d'yew mean? Are you feelin' ill? Yew certainly don' look ill, that is, yew look...lovely, but if'n yew feel ill we c'n ferget walkin' the perimeter an' go see Jelly er Jenny an' they'll have ya feelin' better in no time..." He stopped babbling to catch his breath, knowing he must sound like an imbecile. He hoped nothing he'd said would upset her more... But even more, he hoped she wasn't ill. He looked keenly at her, wondering how Jelly and Jenny managed to tell someone's health just by looking at them... All he could see from this view was how lovely she looked.

Cassandra froze for a moment and almost blinked, ill? "oh no Jerrie I am fine," she said in what she hoped was a reassuring tone. then she dipped her head demurely with a swish of her tail. "no what I meant was...at the ball the only ones who asked me to dance were a stranger and Alonzo. and Alonzo only after the Mating Dance and then it was over quickly and he was off with other queens. that is why it meant so much for Quaxo to ask me to assist him with his Magic. can they tell that the only tom's I have been with were not truly interested in me? is that how the tribe see's me, that and well decorative?" she said softly.

Mungojerrie listened carefully. Now that he knew she was feeling all right, his face grew less worried and more thoughtful...and somewhat embarrassed. She clearly remembered the Ball very well, and every detail that went on. Him? He was at a loss as to what happened for most of that evening. It had been his first Ball since joining the Jellicles, and he'd had no idea what to expect really. At the beginning he'd mostly been able to keep up, and then he'd enjoyed goofing off during the first few songs, been very confused about who Grizabella was and why everyone hated her, and then he and Teazer had run off to get ready for their song. Then Deuteronomy showed up and Munkustrap tried to make them do a play for him, which had gone a bit haywire. Then there had been a Macavity scare... He couldn't recall what Cassandra had been doing during any of that time, and from there everything was a bit of a blur in his mind. He hadn't realized that one could actually get so caught up in the Madness of the Moonlight Dance, but he had, and barely remembered anything until the fight with Macavity and Quaxo's magic show. He remembered, then, Cassandra volunteering to help with the trick to bring back Old Deuteronomy: that struck him deeply, because she volunteered without even knowing what would happen or whether she would even be able to come back. "Oi fink that was a very brave thing yew did," he said finally. Then he realized he had taken so long to answer that she probably didn't remember what he was referring to. "Helping Quax', I mean. Yew didn't know exac'ly wot would 'appen, but were determined to 'elp save Ole D." He blushed, realizing he probably wasn't making much sense. "Wot I'm tryin' ta say, Miss Cassie, is... Any'un c'n see wot a brave, caring soul yew are. No one'ud think that yer jus' decoration, or notice ya only fer your looks, though yew are very lovely." He gulped. Had he just said that? Oh, he did hope he wasn't making matters worse...he was only trying to be truthful. He went hastily on, "If'n any'un does think that way, don't bovver wif'em. They ain't worth yer trouble." He paused, then added, "Not that that's necessarily 'ow the others were thinkin' when they didn't ask ya ta dance. At the Ball, see, we all seem ta go a bit cuckoo-brained. Fer meself, there's much o' that evenin' I can't recall." He sighed. He didn't want to sound like he was making excuses for the other toms' poor behaviour, but he also didn't want to believe they had been as heartless as it sounded...or at least hadn't meant to be. Alonzo, for example, Mungo admired very much, and had a hard time thinking he would ever treat a queen badly. "All this to say, er... Yer a wonderful person, an' don't let any'un make ya think otherwise."

the lovely Abyssinian mixes Mona Lisa mask blossomed into a radiant smile. "Thank you Jerrie, and please do not think ill of Alonzo I do not think he meant to make me feel that way. it is not as I were what is the phrase...carrying a torch for him, he just raised some expectations I suppose." Cassandra said in a soft velvety tone, then she gave Jerrie a shoulder rub, "and you may not remember it but I remember how you danced, it was quite striking! especially as it was your first Ball." she said with a pleased purr. "and Quaxo said he chose me because of my belief in his powers. I just thought that getting Deuteronomy back was ever so more important hmmmm?" she said with a fluid shrug. "I like you Jerrie you are ever so easy to talk to." she added her eyes dipping shyly.

Mungojerrie scratched his ear self-consciously. "Awww...yer too kind," he stammered. "I did try ta keep up wif every'un an' follow along." He paused, uncertain what to say now. She seemed to carry on a conversation so easily, while he got stuck every two sentences. "I...enjoy talkin' wif you as well," he said finally. And it was true. He had all this time thought someone so elegant as Cassandra must look down on a tom like him; but he had never been more wrong.

the sleek brown queen stepped up and gently took the tiger tom's paw, "I suppose that duty calls and we...should go and check those borders." she said with a shy dip of the head. then she looked up eyes gleaming, "I just thought of something, the way that I come into the yard, I do not know if anyone else knows of it. that may make it a point of vulnerability yes? would you like me to show it too you? it is in one of the parts of the yard away from the dens." Cassandra added her tail twitching.

Jerrie blinked, having to think a moment before he remembered what she was talking about. Then he mentally scolded himself for forgetting. "Aye, I s'pose yer right," he admitted. Then, listening to her mention a way into the yard that the others might not know of, he nodded. "If'n ya could show me the spot yer referrin' to, that'ud be most helpful. If it's an entrance no one else's seen, Lonz an' Munk'tap will want ta know about it."

the lovely brown queen led the way through the shadows winding around the junk stacks. "I like coming this way because it is...quiet. like the Den areas the humans are no longer dropping things here." Cassandra said. out of the corner she watched Mungojerrie as he walked enjoying the play of his trim muscles under his fur. as they passed she pointed to a doorless refrigerator on it's side, "and there are plenty of places to duck into if the weather gets bad," she added. shortly they came to a section of fence where a large pipe had fallen through the fence, and rather than move it the humans had simply repaired around it and stacked things in front of it in hopes that their supervisors would not find out. "you see the opening is sheltered both from the weather and those who might be watching, and it is always dry." Cassandra said pointing with a dainty paw, then her long firm tail brushed up against Jerrie,"and it opens out onto a quiet side street that is conveniently close to my Humans home," she added shyly.

Mungojerrie knelt down to examine the entrance. He was part way fascinated, and part way alarmed. The thief in him enjoyed the idea of a "secret" entrance where no one could see you come in and out of the area. But on the other paw, this also meant that - if they knew of it - Macavity or his Henchmen could potentially make use of this entrance whenever they chose. He turned and faced Cassandra again. "We..." he began, then stopped to think a moment. He had been about to say that they should go immediately and inform Munkustrap. But was it really his place to say? This was really Cassandra's special area, and she had shown it to him of her own free will. Perhaps she didn't want it generally known. But then, Henches... "D'yew want us ta tell Munk'tap?" he amended. "Yew showed this ta me, it's yer own choice. I don't min' tellin' ya that it holds potential danger - fer us an' perhaps yer 'umans - if Macaviee fin's out about it. But I do understan' if ye'd prefer ta keep it to yerself. An' after all," he added, trying to sound more reassuring, "if'n the 'enches haven't used it yet, who's ta say they ever will?"
